Security Beefed up at Railway Stations, Airports around New Year

Bulgaria’s outgoing Interior Minister Rumyana Bachvarova

Additional police forces will be deployed to railway and bus stations and airports, as well as the winter resorts across the country and public venues where celebrations are being held, Bulgaria’s outgoing Interior Minister has said.

Luggage and identity documents will be carefully examined in these areas, Focus News Agency quotes Bacharova as saying after a security meeting. Bachvarova, however, has added there are no specific terror threats that security services are currently aware of.

The measures will be in force in the days around New Year’s Eve.

More Than Two Times Less Migrants Detained This Week

More than two times less migrants were detained last week, showed Interior Ministry data. A total of 73 persons were detained in an attempt to enter or leave the country. They are without registration, so there is no information when they entered the country or this is their first attempt.

At the Bulgarian-Turkish border, 30 people were detained โ€“ approximately the same number as the week before. Then, however, more people were arrested on the territory of the country โ€“ over 160.This week this number was reduced to 23.

There is an increase in the number of people arrested at the Bulgarian-Serbian border in an attempt to leave the country. Over 200 people were detained, 20 of them had no registration.Most of the new arrivals continue to come from Afghanistan.

A 33-year-old Dutch national was arrested while on her entry into Bulgaria on Wednesday, prosecutors say.The woman is sought through a European Arrest Warrant.

‘Arab’ Teenager Stabbed in Downtown Sofia Mall

A 19-year-old has been stabbed by guards in a shopping mall in central Sofia, police say. The incident supposedly took place around 09:00 local time (EET). bTV station quotes guards as saying the teenager tried to steal clothes from one of the stores. The mall itself is located on Aleksandar Stamboliyski Blvd.

A witness has told bTV that “a boy took another boy out a store… and beat him with a metal baton and… a sharp object.”

Berlin Attack Suspect Shot Dead in Italy

Anis Amri, the Tunisian national suspected of crashing a lorry into a Berlin Christmas market on Monday, has been shot dead, FAZ quotes security sources as saying. Italy’s Interior Minister Marco Minniti has confirmed the news in a press conference.

Jaish al-Fatah Assumes Responsibility for Assassination of Russian Ambassador

The armed coalition Jaish al-Fatah has assumed responsibility for the assassination of the Russian Ambassdor in Ankara, reported BNR.

Jaish al-Fatah includes the renamed grouping Jabhat al-Nusra โ€“the Syrian branch of the international terrorist network al-Qaeda.

Earlier, 13 people were arrested in Turkey in relation to the shooting. Six of them are relatives of the gunman Melvutย Mert Altintas.

The murder is investigated by a joint Turkish-Russian unit. The Kremlin believes that, โ€œsooner or laterโ€, it will discover the people guilty of the murder of the ambassador emphasised the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov, reported TASS.

Bomb Attack in Turkish City of Kayseri

Thirteen soldiers have been killed and 48 people wounded in a car bomb attack in the Turkish city of Kayseri, reported Reuters.The explosion took place near a bus transporting off-duty military personnel.

Witnesses say that the car was moving near the bus and when it pulled up to it, a blast occurred.The explosion took place near the university in the city, in close proximity to student dormitories.

Turkey’s Police Identifies Two Attackers Responsible for Istanbul Twin Bombing

Anti-terrorist police in Istanbul has identified two of the terrorists responsible for the twin bomb attack in the Turkish capital on December 10 which killed 44 people and wounded hundreds of others, reported Hurriyet newspaper, cited by Focus Agency.

After an investigation of the records from the surveillance cameras, the police managed to establish the movement of the two extremists. One of them came out of a vehicle purchased online and delivered by a third party. According to an examination of the scene, a plastic explosive reinforced with metal bits was placed inside the car and in the vest of the second attacker.
